When it comes to your website, you need to make sure that you consider some very important things. You want to pay attention to as much as possible as hopefully many, many people will be visiting your site. Don’t slack on the details. Here are a few things you might want to consider when designing your site:

1) Do not use splash pages

Splash pages are getting more and more out of style, but some websites still have them. These are the pages that have some nice fancy intro that allows you to watch a presentation and has some flashy things on it like a big “Welcome!” or “Click Here to Enter!” link. These pages are useless and do not give the user a reason to investigate further. They only give the visitor a reason to leave the site. Stay away from them.

2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements

We all would like to make a few extra bucks from advertisements, but have a mindset that you want to provide your visitors with value by the content on your site. Never build a site specifically and solely to make money from advertisements. Most of the time these attempts fail. Visitors can easily feel that sensation of being “sold” way too much. Do not use too many ads.

3) Have a simple and clear navigation

Come up with something that is easy to navigate and understand. Users are used to a certain look and feel on websites. Use some creativity, but don’t get too off the beaten path. Make a logo a link to your home page, have a “home” button easily accessible, make sure a “contact” link is easily accessible. These simple rules will help visitors navigate your site in a quick, efficient manner.

4) Have a clear indication of where the user is

When visitors are deeply buried in your site, you will want to make sure they know how to get back to where they came from and exactly where they are at that given moment. In other words, do your best not to confuse visitors so they will continue browsing around your site.

5) Avoid using audio on your site

A recent poll showed that the #1 most annoying thing to users on websites was media that automatically started playing when they hit a homepage of a site. There is nothing wrong with having video and audio on your site, but make sure the user is the one who wants to listen to media. Make it easy to find and easy to stop if the user desires.

Taking into account these great tips will ensure that you will begin to maximize your sites potential.
